Mizoram University to Host International Seminar on Border Management in March 2026

Mizoram University has announced a three-day international seminar on “Border Management: Traditional and Non-Traditional Security Challenges”, to be held from March 10 to 12, 2026 at its Aizawl campus. The event is being organised by the Department of Political Science and will bring together academics, researchers and policy specialists to examine India’s evolving border security environment, with special focus on the strategic importance of the North East.
The university has invited research papers and abstracts from scholars working on border governance, security studies, regional politics and related disciplines. Abstracts of up to 250 words must be submitted by February 20, 2026, while full papers are due by March 9, 2026.
Registration fees have been set at Rs 1,000 for faculty members and Rs 500 for research scholars.
Broadening meaning of border security
Organisers said the seminar is designed to move beyond the traditional view of borders as military frontiers and instead examine how modern border management involves regulating legal movement of people and goods while responding to increasingly complex transnational threats.
The discussions will distinguish between traditional security challenges—such as territorial disputes, cross-border terrorism and insurgency—and non-traditional threats that affect human security, including illegal migration, organised crime, trafficking, health risks, environmental degradation and cyber vulnerabilities. Particular attention will be given to how these two spheres are increasingly interconnected through phenomena such as narco-terrorism and transnational criminal networks.
The seminar will also place India’s border management within the wider context of foreign policy, regional diplomacy, multilateral frameworks and economic and strategic competition, highlighting the North East’s role as a gateway to South and Southeast Asia.

The programme will be structured around the following thematic areas:
Traditional security challenges
- Territorial disputes and unsettled borders
- Cross-border terrorism
- Insurgency and separatist movements
- Regional organisations and multilateral mechanisms
- Border trade and regional connectivity
Non-traditional security challenges
- Illegal migration and demographic impacts
- Transnational organised crime, including human, drug and wildlife trafficking
- Health and environmental security
- Cyber threats
- Soft power, diplomacy and capacity building
Submission guidelines
Full papers should be between 3,000 and 5,000 words, including abstract and references, and must follow APA citation style. Submissions must include the author’s name, institutional affiliation, email address and contact number. All papers and abstracts are to be sent to [email protected].
About Mizoram University
Mizoram University was established by an Act of Parliament in 2000 and began functioning in July 2001. It is located on a 978-acre campus on the outskirts of Aizawl. The university received NAAC ‘A’ grade accreditation in 2014 and 2019, which was upgraded to A+ in 2025, and also holds ISO certification. It has consistently featured in the top 100 institutions in the NIRF rankings from 2016 to 2023, placing 76th in 2023 and 77th in 2024.
The Department of Political Science, established in 2002, currently has three professors, two associate professors, one assistant professor and two non-teaching staff members. As of December 31, 2025, the department has awarded 41 PhDs and 22 MPhil degrees.
