Biometric Attendance Made Mandatory for PHD and M.Tech Students at NIT Manipur

The National Institute of Technology Manipur has notified PhD and M.Tech students across all departments, excluding part-time enrollees, about the introduction of a biometric attendance system starting from the even semester of 2026. The system, effective from January 12, 2026, will require daily face recognition logins and will be essential for all administrative and academic procedures.

The memorandum, dated January 24, 2026, outlines that the biometric system applies to the January to June semester. Students must register their biometrics in person with Ms. Karuna Wangkhem, the technical officer, between January 5 and January 9, 2026, during working hours. Required documents include a soft or hard copy of the identity card and the latest academic registration receipt or slip.

Failure to complete registration by the deadline of January 9, 2026, will result in students not being included in official records. The attendance process involves two mandatory sessions per working day: a morning session from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. and an afternoon session from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. The system is located in the entry lobby or hall of the administrative block.

The directive emphasizes that biometric records will be compulsory for all official processes moving forward. It was issued with the approval of the competent authority and signed by Prof. Kh. Tomba Singh, the registrar of NIT Manipur.

Copies of the memorandum were distributed to the director’s personal secretary, all deans, heads of departments for circulation, assistant registrars, the technical officer for website upload, the academic and management information system section, and relevant files.

This initiative reflects the institute’s effort to standardize attendance tracking in higher education, ensuring accuracy and reliability in student engagement records.

The measure is significant as it integrates technology into routine academic administration, potentially streamlining verification for scholarships, examinations, and other institutional activities.

Students are advised to adhere to the registration schedule to avoid disruptions in their academic progress.
