Assam University Launches Self-Financed Certificate Course in 3D Printing and Reverse Engineering

Silchar | December 31, 2025
Assam University has introduced a self-financed certificate course in digital designing, reverse engineering, and 3D printing under its newly established Centre for 3D Printing Excellence Project, marking a significant step toward strengthening advanced manufacturing education in the North East.

The Centre was formally set up on June 26, 2024, with funding support from the PM-DevINE scheme of the Ministry of Development of the North Eastern Region (DoNER). The project is being executed through the Assam Electronics Development Corporation Limited, in collaboration with industry and academic partners.

Focus on Industry 4.0 and Skill Development

The certificate programme aims to:

  • Enhance technical education and practical skills among youth

  • Reskill working professionals for Industry 4.0 requirements
  • Promote innovation aligned with the Make in India initiative
  • Support application-driven manufacturing in sectors such as healthcare, disability rehabilitation, oil and gas, and agricultural mechanisation
  • Foster an emerging industrial ecosystem in the North Eastern region

State-of-the-Art 3D Printing Facility
The 3D printing laboratory is housed on the ground floor of the Department of Agricultural Engineering and is equipped with:

  • Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) printers

  • Resin-based printers

  • Polymer-based printers

With this comprehensive infrastructure, Assam University has become the first central university in the North East to offer all three major 3D printing technologies under one facility.

The Centre has already mentored four startups, which emerged from an ideation hackathon held in Guwahati, showcasing its role in innovation and entrepreneurship development.

Hands-on Training and Course Coverage

The programme provides extensive practical training in:

  • 3D scanning using laser scanning and photogrammetry

  • Reverse engineering for converting physical objects into editable CAD models

  • Digital design and advanced CAD modelling

  • Complete 3D printing workflows and rapid prototyping

  • Additive manufacturing techniques including FDM, Selective Laser Sintering (SLS), and Stereolithography (SLA)

Eligibility and Contact Details

The course is open to:

  • Students from the North Eastern states

  • Youth seeking industry-relevant skill development

  • Working professionals aiming to gain expertise in 3D printing, digital design, and reverse engineering
