The Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IIT Guwahati) has completed the selection process for its PhD admissions for the December 2025 session, with offer letters now available to selected candidates through the institute’s official admission portal. Registration for newly admitted scholars is scheduled to begin on January 3, 2026.
According to official timelines, candidates who have been offered seats must complete document verification and registration formalities to secure admission. The institute has cautioned that failure to meet eligibility requirements or submit mandatory documents within stipulated deadlines may lead to cancellation of admission.
Admission Process and Timeline
Applications for the December 2025 PhD session closed on October 28, 2025, following which departmental shortlisting and selection processes were conducted between November 24 and December 5, 2025. Selection involved evaluation of academic records, national-level qualifying scores such as GATE, NET-JRF, or CEED, and, where applicable, written tests and interviews. These assessments were conducted in offline, online, or hybrid modes depending on departmental requirements.
Registration of newly admitted students will take place on January 3, 2026, followed by orientation on January 4, with academic classes commencing from January 5, 2026.
Academic Scope and Research Areas
PhD programmes are offered across 24 departments, schools, and centres, covering a wide range of disciplines including engineering, sciences, humanities, design, management, and interdisciplinary research. Key areas of research include artificial intelligence, data science, bioengineering, nanotechnology, renewable energy, environmental sustainability, disaster management, and health technologies.
The institute continues to promote interdisciplinary research through its specialised schools and centres, aligning doctoral research with national and global challenges.
Eligibility, Reservations, and Financial Support
Eligibility criteria vary by discipline but generally require a relevant postgraduate degree with prescribed minimum marks, with relaxations applicable to reserved categories as per Government of India norms. Reservation policies apply to SC, ST, OBC-NCL, EWS, and PwD categories. Candidates admitted under OBC-NCL and EWS categories must submit valid certificates issued after April 1, 2024, in the prescribed format.
Selected full-time PhD scholars are eligible for institute assistantships, subject to fulfilment of verification requirements. Assistantships commence after successful completion of admission formalities.
Document Verification and Compliance
Admitted candidates are required to present original academic certificates, qualifying examination proof, category certificates (if applicable), medical fitness reports, and payment receipts during registration. Candidates awaiting final degree results must submit proof by January 30, 2026, failing which their admission will be cancelled.
